Asian Chili Garlic Tofu Stir-Fry in the summer

The first step in making this tofu is to Slice it into even slices and Press it. By pressing the tofu first is get a lot of the water out of the tofu so we can create some texture instead of it being soft and squishy. This is a big step do not skip it. It is not complicated at all just lay the tofu on a layer of paper towel then cover with another layer and then put some even weight on top of it. I used a wooden cutting board but you can really use anything that weighs about 1 pound. Let the tofu get pressed for 20-30 minutes. I love making tofu Asian style.

Ingredients

Preparing Tofu
  • 14 oz tofu cut into bite-size pieces
  • 2 tbsp wheat flour
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1 tbsp cooking oil

Chili Garlic Sauce
  • 2-3 garlic finely chopped
  • 1/2" ginger finely chopped
  • 1 tsp red chili
  • 1 1/2 tbsp ketchup
  • 1/2 tbsp sesame oil
  • 1 shallot thinly sliced
  • 1 tsp honey
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce reduced sodium
  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1 1/4 cup vegetable broth
  • 2-3 tsp cornstarch mix with a tablespoon of water
  • few springs of green onion
Instructions
  1. Gently mix tofu with flour and cornstarch to coat evenly.
  2. heat the oil in the pan. Add tofu and cook for a few minutes to form a crust on each side turning frequently. Take out the cooked tofu and set it aside.
  3. On the same pan, then heat the sesame oil over medium heat.  Add garlic, ginger and chili flakes and cook for about one minute or until fragrant.
  4. Then add sliced shallots and fry until translucent for about 1-2 min.
  5. Now add ketchup, soy sauce, vinegar, and honey. Cook the mixture for 2-3 minutes.
